Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Location: Bhaktapur District, Nepal
Bhaktapur Durbar Square, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is in the historic Newar city of Bhaktapur, also known as Khwopa. The city is celebrated for its rich art, culture, and traditional architecture. Founded in the 12th century during the early Malla period, Bhaktapur flourished under Malla rulers who constructed magnificent temples, palaces, and nurtured a vibrant pottery tradition.
Today, Bhaktapur continues to function as a living museum, renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, distinctive cuisine, and well-preserved cultural identity. Although the 2015 Gorkha earthquake caused significant damage to several heritage monuments, reconstruction and restoration efforts are still visible during field visits.
